Wicketkeeping forms a significant part of cricket. Undoubtedly, it is the wicketkeeper who needs to pay extra attention to every single ball and adjust according to the pace and length of the bowlers. The wicketkeeper should stand firm in every condition while wearing heavy protective cricket gear. And if you are the one who wants to do wicket keeping in the near future or does that currently, you need to buy cricket wicket keeping kit to have all the gear meant to play the game. Let’s take a look at four techniques of wicket keeping and ways to improve them.

 Reflexes

The players who are enthusiastic about wicket keeping need to have incredible hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. It helps the wicketkeepers to react quickly on the field. And you cannot deny the fact that the most important thing in wicket keeping is the right reaction at the right time. So, you need to train your reflexes. You should make your basics strong by practicing drills. A drill can be performed with a golf ball. You just need to have a coach with you. Let the coach throw a golf ball against the wall, and you stand in front of the wall to catch it as soon as possible. It will help improve your reflexes in the long run.

 Footwork

Good footwork is the sign of a good wicketkeeper. Get your feet moving so that you will be in a good position to catch the ball even if the ball has deviated from its path. If you want to improve your footwork, you can do a goalkeeper exercise. For this, you need to set up a goal with training cones and then move your feet to stop the ball from going into the goal.

 Glove Work

You cannot overlook the importance of hands in handling the ball, especially when you are wearing gloves, as these are a vital part of wicket keeper equipment. Always receive the ball with soft hands. You can practice a drill with a tennis ball and tennis racquet. Let your training partner hit the ball with the racquet, and you try to stop the ball. Additionally, practice both by wearing gloves and without wearing gloves. Lastly, keep on changing the distance between your coach or training partner and you. It will help you analyze the wicket-keeping with several difficulty levels.

 Deflection

You must have seen that some balls get deflected before they even settle in your gloves. Edges off the cricket bat and flicks are common in this game. It becomes important for you to replicate such situations in your training period to perform your best in the actual match. Stand behind an obstacle so that you can’t see where the ball has pitched. Likewise, you can let your coach do a throwdown at an object to get the ball deflected before you have to catch it.

 Takeaway

Believe it or not, the primary role of all the wicketkeepers is to receive the ball and try to run or stump the batter out. So, you must constantly improve your techniques by following the above-mentioned tricks and hacks and let your wicket-keeping skills shine on the field.
