Grills, fronts, or gold, are mostly known as “Grillz” in the hip hop culture, and they’re jewelry created by experienced dentists and worn over the teeth. Generally, grillz are made from metallic material and are removable. The origin of Grillz can be traced back to the hip-hop community in the 1990s. These grillz were worn for the first time by the hip-hop community in New York City in the 1980s, and were upgraded in the 1990s to look fancier. As Southern hip hop became more popular in the mid-2000s, grills became more popular among artists.

The history of Grillz

Inserting gems into teeth dates back to hip-hop culture, but popular hip hop artists started wearing them in the early 1980s. However, Eddie Plein, who is from New York, is credited for kick starting the trend of putting gems above teeth while performing hip hop songs. He started by adapting dental crowns from one tooth into several caps and this helped to create the first grills that were originally known as caps or fonts. With the popularity of Grillz getting over the roof, many rappers, especially in New York City started using them.

 Grillz with more elaborate designs

After outfitting New York-based rappers, Plein later moved to Atlanta and started working on the design of more elaborate grills for renowned rappers such as Goodie Mob, Big Daddy Kane, and more. But other than Plein, there are others who have been mentioned as having contributed to the popularity of Grillz. These people include Afrika Bambaataa and Slick Rick.

Grillz in the 2010s

Grills maintained their popularity throughout the southern parts of the United States, although this popularity was not sustained elsewhere. Grills, on the other hand, experienced a resurgence in popularity in the United States of America in the 2000s, owing primarily to their appearance in hip-hop music. In around 2005, a single called “Grillz” was released by artists that combined Ali, Big Gipp, Paul Wall, and Naelly. Paul Wall, who is in the grill business, helped popularize these grills.

What are Grillz made of?

There are different kinds of metals that are used to make grills. More often, platinum, gold, and silver are mostly used. The design is that these metals are inlaid with precious stones that are either removable or firmly fixed. For golden grills, 10–24 karats are the preferred choices, and they can be tinted white, rose, or yellow.

How much  does Grillz cost?

The amount that you will incur for wearing a grill is between a hundred dollars and thousands of dollars. The cost is determined by the material that is used to make the grills and also by the number of teeth that you want covered. Around 2006, grills were not just being worn by American hip hop musicians, but also by hip hop enthusiasts. In most instances, the demographic covered was between 18 and 35 years of age.

Athletes that have worn grills in major competitions

There are a few instances in history where grills have achieved mainstream media attention and one of those instances is during the 2012 Summer Olympics. Ryan Lochte posed to the mainstream media with grills that had stones designed like the United States Flag. In prior competitions, this athlete had worn golden grills.
