When most people think of a garden deck, they picture a raised level usually made from wood, which is used as a seating area in the summer. This is a pretty apt description of what the majority of garden decks are used for.
As more people buy their own homes and want to make a statement about their personality, it can be an interesting project to consider what else you can make your garden deck into. Rather than just a seating area for when you have guests over or when you are hosting a barbecue.
Here are some quirky uses of a garden deck that could be worth considering if you are thinking of adding an unusual feature to your outdoor space.
Having a swimming pool installed into your garden deck is no small project. So, undoubtedly you will need the help of deck builders to make this a reality, as the deck will also have to support the weight of the water and will have to be designed to fit comfortably into your garden.
You also need to consider the materials that your deck is made out of, as you will not want this to be too slippery, especially if you have children.
A covered deck is not a new idea, but what you place underneath it can be. Of course, you can opt for standard garden furniture. Some people have even gone so far as to put outdoor workout spaces under their covered decks. Some others have had BBQ pits built into their deck, which would then be covered and allow you to barbecue even when it’s raining.
You could even have more expensive outdoor furniture under a covered deck, as it would be less likely to become damaged by the weather. So why not choose soft textiles or even a wood-burning stove?
A built-in pond would be quite different from a swimming pool, especially if it is a wildlife pond. Once again, you would need to hire any professional contractors to make this a feature of your deck, and you will need to choose a hard enough material that could support the weight of the water. If you were adding fish, such as koi, you would need to ensure that the material that the deck is made from is nontoxic. During wet weather, some of the splashbacks will certainly land in the pond and could cause damage. So be sure that the deck itself is sealed and will not create issues for any fish in the pond.
If you have a covered deck, it can be worth considering investing in an outdoor cinema, especially if you and your family are a fan of films and don’t want to sit in front of the TV anymore.
Just be sure to place your outdoor cinema in an area where it will be safe from things like sun glare as you will want to be able to see the images on the screen!
Who says that an outdoor deck needs to be one level? You can invest in having an outdoor deck that is tiered, allowing you to have features on each level. This can be great if you have a sloped garden and want to include a lot in the design, such as an outdoor playing space for your children or an area where you can entertain guests.
