The cannabis industry is still in its initial stages of development, with the rules on packaging not fully established. As the industry continues to grow, companies are seeking methods to differentiate themselves in the eyes of customers.

Packaging can help you stand out. However, effective packaging requires great design skills and following the basic elements.

Child-Resistant Packaging

Some states require cannabis packaging to have child-resistant features. Use packaging materials that meet this criterion. You might want to try heat-sealed packaging with difficult-to-open flaps or tabs to make it tough for a kid to open.

Product Display and Storage

Cannabis, like other difficult-to-handle pharmaceuticals, is not to be sold to anyone. Depending on the state you are operating from, you may be required to store your cannabis on a glass counter to ensure that the customer does not gain immediate access to the commodity.

Regulations on Cannabis Packaging

Packaging in the pharmaceutical industry is strictly regulated, and this is no different with cannabis. Brands must strike a balance between eye-catching aesthetics and essential customer information. You can’t just design a pretty pouch and call it a day. It must adhere to local, state, and federal laws.

Labeling Restrictions and Requirements

All important information must be included for your consumers’ safety. This information includes ingredients, health risks, right dosage, ability impairment, barcode, and batch number for identification.

Some states may also require both the “main label” and “informational label,” while others will not allow you to claim any health benefits.

Since cannabis products are not to be consumed by persons under the age of 21, the packaging should be such that it does not appeal to them. Aesthetic elements such as confectionary-like packaging, cartoons, imagery, or characters commonly used to promote to children.

Packaging Materials and Aesthetic Value

Although they really matter, the packaging and labeling regulations are not all you should consider. The aesthetic effects and the type of packaging material are as important. You’ve got to make an impression at showcasing your product!

Combine a compelling message with decorative effects that meet the requirements of the law, capture buyers’ attention, protect the product, and convey your brand’s values.

Packaging Can Add Value to Your Product

Cold sealing uses ultraviolet light processes to adhere foil to the packaging material. Look up cold foil colors in the PMS and CMYK color spaces.

Laminates and coatings not only give more protection against damage but also give your product a stunning gloss. You can choose between gloss and tactile coatings or even take it a step higher with pearlescent inks.

Hot foil stamping achieves an outcome similar to cold sealing. However, this technique uses heat to adhere foil to the substrate, resulting in a stunning metallic finish. It creates a vibrant pattern with any color, including classic silver and gold colors.

Design Anti Counterfeit Packaging

As in many other sectors, criminals may design packaging that is similar to yours and use it to package counterfeit products. Counterfeit cannabis poses a health risk to the consumer and can also ruin the reputation of your brand.

Overt or covert authentication is the best way to overcome this hurdle.

Overt authentication systems are clearly visible but difficult to imitate. They include:

  • Color-shifting inks
  • Tamper-evident sealing
  • Pearlescent inks produce a particularly gleaming look that manufacturers and reputable retailers can quickly detect.
  • Integrated 2D and QR codes help easily search branded items.

Covert authentication systems are visually unnoticeable in the absence of technology. Among them are:

  • Infrared (IR) or ultraviolet (UV) light-reactive colors are verified via IR or UV light technology.
  • Hidden indicia ink becomes apparent when viewed a specialized decoding software lens.

Due to the strict regulations in the cannabis sector, packaging and labeling can be quite a difficult process.

You can only make things easier by working with an experienced packaging and labeling partner who is knowledgeable with the legal standards and top designs.
