There is a growing trend to lessen the amount of manicuring and micromanagement of our garden spaces and let nature take over to some extent. Having a garden full of nature, animals, and life will provide hours of fun and entertainment as well as relaxation. Here are a few tips on how you can achieve this.

Bug hotels

Placing a few chopped logs or tree stumps in a corner of the garden and simply leaving them there will create a perfect space for bugs and insects. Then place a garden bench close enough to watch and observe the ecosystem (bug and insect hotel) take root and develop. Obviously, don’t follow this tip if you have any insect phobias or concerns.

Birds feeding and watching

Birds are one of the simplest forms of nature to welcome and keep coming back to your garden. Set up a station with bird feed and water, and they will come. Keeping a birdwatcher’s guide will allow you to provide suitable food types and keep an eye on the birds as they change with the seasons. They are also the most versatile and clearly observable of the creatures that will visit your garden. Be aware that even the bugs and insects that you provide accommodation for above may become the first step on a food web for these feathery friends.

Flowers

Whether you let the wildflowers take over and do their thing in a section of the garden or keep planting seasonal blooms, they will serve to keep the bees happy and visiting your garden. It’s that constant humming or buzzing, which serves to provide an ongoing bassline to the other aspects of the garden soundtrack or cacophony of sounds. Look for flowers that are local to your area and preferably ones that are as hardy and long-lasting as possible. Shrubs and evergreen herbs such as rosemary and lavender will also provide the underlying smell that adds another level of stimulation from the garden you produce.

Simply add water

Having a water feature of any size will provide an entirely new environment for all sorts of creatures. It is also the water feature that arguably provides for the most relaxing sounds of all. Be sure to have a ‘real gardener’ (professional) line and prepare the pond or water feature to prevent any drainage issues that may affect the house or your neighbours’ gardens. Standing water should also be avoided as it will create an environment that may not provide the vibrance and life that you’re looking for.

Many of us have been schooled in the way of high and ongoing garden maintenance, after all, our homes are our castles and all of us want them to look their best both outside and in. However, the trend toward more natural outside spaces has included active engagement with nature and it is the simplest aspects of garden design that are mentioned above that will go a long way towards providing you with a great garden space.
