If you have an affinity for gardening and have always taken great pride in the impeccable state of your garden, it’s easy to start thinking about the next steps you can take. Gardening is a nice and calming hobby, but it can also be a great business idea. Still, just like with any other business, there are many things that can be seen as a benefit, but there’s an equal number of downsides that shouldn’t be ignored. If you’re thinking about starting your own gardening business in the future, here’s what you should keep in mind.

Helps you stay in shape

One thing the majority of people who do garden work have in common is that they are fit and in great shape. The fact that you are spending a lot of time breathing fresh air and digging around the garden results in muscular arms and strong legs. Not to mention that you will be moving around a lot, taking care of the plants and decorating the garden, which will significantly increase your stamina as well. Gardening tasks are many and often include quite a bit of heavy duty work: watering, raking the leaves and grass clippings, trimming the hedges, planting new herbs and flowers, and much more.

Can worsen existing health conditions

On the other hand, all that hard work can seriously affect any existing medical conditions that you might already struggle with. This means that your high blood pressure can rise even further if you’re not staying in shade and hydrated, your aching knees can hurt even more, and if you have back problems, being bent over certainly won’t help. You should be aware that gardening as a physical activity can both help you get healthy, and negatively impact your health, so be careful and talk to your doctor before you decide to start a business.

Perfect for outdoor lovers

If you’re a fan of outdoors and nature, gardening is the perfect hobby, and it can also be an ideal career too. You will be spending a lot of time outside, breathing fresh air and the scent of flowers and herbs, which can be most calming. You will also be surrounded with insects and the sound of birds chirping – the sound that might even help you meditate. There is also the sound of running water, either in the form of bird fountain or sprinkles. You can also greatly benefit simply from  buying a retractable hose reel and enjoy the sight and sound of water flowing while you’re watering the plants. If office work isn’t your cup of tea – gardening business might be exactly what you need.

It’s not a good year-long job

The sad truth is that gardening business is mostly seasonal. As much as you might look forward to hibernating during winter, there will always be bills to pay, and without proper work, you might struggle financially during slower seasons. In addition to this, work during spring and summer can become overwhelming, due to the sheer number of people who will want to hire you. This sounds like a great starting point for ambitious people who are hoping to become successful business owners. On the other hand, as much good as being fully booked will bring to your budget, you are under severe risk of burnout.

Flexible working hours

Being your own boss had many perks, one of which is certainly flexible working hours. Everything remains up to you – in case you want to work today, feel free to go to work, but if you need some time off, nobody can stop you from taking free days. There is also the fact that you might be able to rest on those cold, rainy days. While most people look out the window and dream about being able to stay in bed and not go to work, you can actually make it happen, as gardening tasks usually require good weater to be completed.

As you can see, starting your own gardening business can bring so many great things into your life, but it’s far from fool-proof and perfect. If you’re sure that it’s the path you are going to take in the future, it would be wise to keep some of the downsides in mind too. When you know the potential problems you might encounter, you will be able to prepare for them so that they don’t become permanent obstacles.
