Altair was the first personal computer launched in 1974 by MITS. Though it failed to make much of a commercial impact, Altair set the stage for a paradigm shift in computing experience from mainframe computers to PCs.

As giant manufacturers and assemblers of personal computers started flooding the market, new technological advancements led to the evolution of personal computers. Desktop markets started growing through the ’80s and ’90s. From 2003 onwards, a new trend surfaced with the increasing popularity of portable PCs or laptops. Gradually the US and later the global markets started showing signs of moving from desktops to laptops as a chosen option for personal computing.

Why Have Laptops Become Popular?

  • Portability: The most significant advantage of laptops is their portability. You can take the easy-to-carry mobile device to virtually any part of the house or office.
  • One Compact Finished Unit: Unlike a desktop, portable computers are completely useable devices on their own. Laptops don’t need a separate central processing unit, keyboard, mouse, power chord, etc., to be functional.
  • Ideal for Frequent Travellers: The portability makes it easy for travelers to carry the device while on tour. This feature is particularly effective for business executives required to be on the move most of the time.
  • Suitable for Corporate Presentations:  Transferring files from your assigned desktop on a pen drive and then plugging the same into the desktop in the conference room for a presentation is a thing of the passe. Often you end up in an embarrassing situation to realize that you have failed to transfer some critical data. Now you can walk in with your laptop and plug & play whichever file you want to show.
  • No Need for A Constant Power Source: Many modern laptops have extended battery backup. Thus you don’t need a power source to operate the device. This built-in characteristic makes it particularly easy for office users who can huddle together in the cafeteria or the boss’s cabin to work on reports and presentations that require everyone’s input.
  • WiFi Connectivity: You can access the internet anywhere on your computer with WiFi connectivity. Students can carry their laptops to college libraries, while freelancers can sit in a cafe to work on their projects. Working from home effectively transforms to work from anywhere with an efficient laptop in your backpack.
  • Touch Screen Facility: With touch screen technology entering the laptop market, the user interface has become smooth as silk.
  • Enhanced Graphics: Older laptops were not very conducive to high graphical usage. However, modern laptops have become more compatible with heavy applications. Videographers, graphic designers, digital art experts, etc., enjoy this technological advancement as they no longer need to be confined to one space for their work.
  • Gaming Experience: Earlier notions suggested that light softwares and applications were ideal for laptops; hence, gaming was not one of the popular usages of a laptop. New age devices have altered this perception. Many laptops are now designed to handle high-graphic games.
  • Flip Screen Laptops: Slimmer and lighter, flip screen laptops give you the best of a laptop and a tablet’s features.
