Often a green background is a quick and easy way to give your videos a professional look. However green screens can be very expensive, you can buy green screen rolls which will cost upwards of £50, getting green cloth or green fabric from eBay could also get expensive.

In this tutorial I will show you how simple it is to make a green screen background for under £5 which costs less than buying green cloth.

Step 1. Gather Your Supplies

To create a green screen, you will need: Green poster paint/poster board A roller tray or large piece of paper Something to cover the area around where you’re going to be painting A box cutter A green background (something green to paint behind you) Paint tray (if using a roller tray)

Step 2. Protect Surrounding Area

You will need to protect the area around where you’re going to be painting. You can use things lying around your home such as old boxes or newspapers. To keep it more professional and make your green screen quicker to set up, try and find some green fabric and use that instead of newspaper/cardboard.

Step 3. Lay Out Your Green Fabric

Once you have protected the surrounding areas, lay out your green fabric onto the table / floor etc… Try not to crinkle it so it is easier to paint on. Once laid out flat, cover with green poster board or green poster paint to create your green screen.

Step 4. Paint It Green!

Finally paint the green fabric green, I prefer using green poster board as it is easier to apply evenly, but green poster paint will work too. Make sure you cover the green screen with a thin layer of green and leave to dry overnight. If you’re in a rush and need to use your green screen straight away just increase the number of layers on top of each other until you get an even green colour on your green background! Once painted and dried lay out some more green fabric over it so it doesn’t get ruined when moving equipment around etc…

Now all you need to do is go round the edge of the green screen with some scissors or a box cutter and remove the excess green fabric, and your green screen is ready to be used!

FAQs:

What green screen should I use?

If you are using green poster board or green poster paint then there is no need to worry about what green screen material to buy, however if you are using green fabric the best kind of green screen material to use is a green blackout cloth. This ensures that none of the light coming through your green background will show up on your videos. Green blackout cloths are also great for reducing shadows on your green screen which can make editing more difficult.

Why do I need a box cutter?

You don’t strictly need one but it helps with cutting around the edge of your green screen so it doesn’t have any excess green hanging round the edges. If you are using just an old piece of paper or cardboard to cover the green screen, then a box cutter would be very useful in removing this.

Is green screen photography better than green screen videos?

Both green screen videos and green screen photography have their benefits such as: Green screen photos can be edited to add different backgrounds (e.g. green street/forest/sea) whereas green screen videos cannot do this unless you use green-screen editing software which is not professional Looking at recent Hollywood films, green screening for video has been around much longer than green screening with photography and therefore has become more advanced and popular for video rather than photo (e.g. Jurassic Park)

Conclusion:

For green screening with a video camera, green screen videos are still the most popular and a green background with video is more common. However green screen photography has been around much longer than green screen videos and therefore green screen photography also has its advantages such as being able to add different backgrounds to your pictures.

Using green screen is very advantageous as it allows you to remove the green background and replace it with whatever backdrop you want. It can be used for professional green screening videos or green screening photos, so why not give green screen a try today!
