A QuickBooks ProAdvisor or certified bookkeeper is someone who has been certified and is familiar with the QuickBooks product lines. There are four certifications that are essential: QuickBooks Desktop Pro/Premier (or QuickBooks Online), and QuickBooks POS (or QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions).

Sign up for a QuickBooks Online Accountant subscription to become a certified ProAdvisor. You will have free access to all training materials including webinars, videos, virtual conferences, and in-person events, as well as certification exams, right from the ProAdvisor tab on QuickBooks Online Accountant.

Requirements to Become a QuickBooks ProAdvisor

To become certified, you don’t need to have an accounting or bookkeeping background. To become a QuickBooks certified bookkeeper or ProAdvisor:

  • Register for a QuickBooks Online Accountant subscription.
  • Plan to spend between 12 and 16 hours studying in preparation for the exam.
  • Pass the 80-question exam with a score of at least 80%.
  • If you fail your first attempt, you can take the exam three more times. If you fail the first three attempts, you will be locked out for 60-days. You can take the exam again after the 60-day period has expired.
  • These are the steps that you need to take in order to become a certified QuickBooks online bookkeeper ProAdvisor.

1. Register for QuickBooks Online Accountant

Enrollment will get you a free QuickBooks Online account subscription. This subscription can be used for both your firm’s bookkeeping and to access the QuickBooks Online accounts of your clients.

To create a QuickBooks Online Accountant free account, you will need to first provide basic information. The next step is to enter your:

  •  Email address (user ID).
  •  First name
  •  Last name
  • Phone number

2. Preparation for the QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor Certification Examination

You can access all study guides, webinars, and exams when you create your QuickBooks Online Accounting account. You must study for the exam in order to pass it. The ProAdvisor link is located in the left menu of your QuickBooks Online Accountant screen. Click the Training tab to access it. There are courses available for every QuickBooks product. These will prepare you for the certification exams. If you are new to QuickBooks Online, it is a smart idea to start with the Introduction to QuickBooks Online course for accountants.

You will need to have a basic understanding and knowledge of accounting principles, as well as information about the QuickBooks Online Accountant system, in order to pass the exam. Although the training course prepares you for both, it is not mandatory. If you have this information you can take the exam and receive your certification. You can also obtain continuing professional education credits (CPE) while you prepare for the certification exam. These credits are required to maintain your Certified Public Accountants (Cpa) license.

QuickBooks Online for Accountants

The Introduction to QuickBooks Online Accountant course consists of seven learning modules that can be completed in approximately 4.5 hours. It will earn you four CPE credits. The topics covered in the QuickBooks Online course for accountants are:

  • QuickBooks Online Accountant: Register and log in to QuickBooks Online Accountant to learn about the key features of the Accountant dashboard, navigation toolbar, and other important information.
  • The client’s QuickBooks Online: This gives you an overview of workflows and tells how to best explore the client’s QuickBooks Online.
  • Customers and sales: Create sales receipts, add customers, create invoices online, and enter any payments received.
  • Expenses & Vendors: Find out about the Expenses Center, Vendor workflows, and the Expenses center. Learn how to enter expenses and how to pay bills.
  • Banking: Find out how to use bank feeds and the best bank feed workflows.
  • Building blocks of reporting: Refer to the Chart of Accounts and Products and Services List, which provide the foundation for basic reports.
  • Bringing clients to QuickBooks Online Accountant: Learn more about the subscription levels and how to add a client.

QuickBooks Online Certification

You will receive seven CPE credits for the QuickBooks Online course. It consists of eight learning modules that can be completed in approximately eight hours. The topics covered in the QuickBooks Pro Online course include:

  • QuickBooks Online solutions to clients: Learn about your clients to help them choose the right QuickBooks Online subscription, set up a QuickBooks Online account, and discuss billing with clients.
  • Client onboarding: How to select the best company settings, find new customers and vendors and set up bank feeds, create a chart of accounts, and much more.
  • Additional client onboarding tasks
  • Manage your clients and work with Quickbooks Online Accountant. Learn how to set up projects for QuickBooks clients as well as track them.
  • Supporting private clients: Learn how to use the features of undeposited money, estimates, purchase orders, and vendor credits.
  • Banking and tools: Connect your bank and credit card accounts with QuickBooks to reconcile, create recurring transactions and manage receipts and bills.
  • Reporting and Analytics: Create, modify, and run reports such as profit and loss, balance sheets, sales, expense reports, and more.
  • Learn how to close the accounting cycle.

3. Take the QuickBooks Certification Examination

The QuickBooks bookkeeper certification exams can be accessed by clicking “Take exam” in the upper-right corner of the QuickBooks Online Certification course list. The exam has 80 questions in total and is broken into five sections. Each of the five sections should be completed in approximately three and a half hours.

Before confirming accommodation, you will be able to audit your answers during the exam. Each part should be completed in one session. To receive your certification, you must answer at least 80% of each question correctly. The exam can be passed three times. You have three chances to pass the exam. If you fail the third time, you will need to wait 60 days before you can take it again.

This exam is open-book. It’s recommended to have your study guide open for the section you are taking. QuickBooks should also be available so that you can quickly access it if necessary.

4. Take a look at other ProAdvisor certifications

Once you have completed the QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification you can look into other certifications like QuickBooks Online Advanced or QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise.

5. Complete your ProAdvisor Profile
