No doubt, the country has many wonderful traditions, exciting historical moments, and a lot of mysteries that have attracted the attention of many people for decades. Perhaps, one of the most significant adapted aspects of traditional Japanese culture into modern culture can be the Samurai warriors. The Samurai warriors were known for their fighting skills, prowess, and unique weapons and armor. And, one of the most distinct of a Samurai Warrior is the sword that they utilized in battles.

Besides the popular katana sword, there are several other Samurai swords available on the market, such as at samuraiswords.store. Japanese culture is usually associated with the katana sword, but there are a variety of swords that you can buy, and each one has its distinct style and shape. This article discusses different types of Japanese swords available on the market.

The katana sword

As explained earlier, the katana sword happens to be one of the most recognizable and popular Samurai swords. Quite often, the katana sword is called the Samurai Sword. It’s worth noting that the katana sword has distinct features that include a gentle curve and a single-edged upward-facing blade that comes with a long grip for both your hands.

Remember that this upward-facing part of the blade is designed to allow you to put a fatal blow to your adversary in just one move. And, it is a lightweight and slender sword that is extremely sharp and is known for its cutting ability. The good news is that you can get a katana sword from some reputable suppliers on the market, so make sure to check for it.

The Tachi sword

The Tachi sword is considered to be the predecessor of the katana. This is because before the katana sword, the Japanese warriors preferred to use this sword. This sword has several similar features to the katana. But the main difference between these two swords is that the tachi has a more prominent curve and a longer blade.

In the past, the Japanese warriors favored the tachi sword because the blade has an extra length. It’s worth noting that the Japanese warriors used to ride horses, so the extra length allowed them to deal with their enemies easily. But unlike the katana, this sword has a downward-facing edge.

The Chokuto

One of the earliest Japanese swords that has ever been recorded is considered to be the Chokuto. Many people believe that the chokuto came from China and the Japanese imported it at least in the 10th century.

Compared to the tachi and the katana, the chokuto has the basic appearance. It has a one-edge straight-cut blade that features a simple handle. Japanese warriors who used this sword often wore it by hanging around their waist for easy access.

The Wakizashi

There is a good chance that you may watch some shows or movies where the Samurai warriors have two swords at the same time. Quite often, the swords would be a wakizashi sword and a katana sword.

A wakizashi sword is quite similar in style to the katana swords as they have the curved edge. The only difference is that the wakizashi sword is shorter than a katana by up to 20cm. Therefore, when a person wears both of these swords, the wakizashi can be used as a backup weapon. You should note that the name Wakizashi means side insertion in Japanese. No doubt, this is a great complementary weapon you can use to the katana.

There are several uses of the wakizashi during fights. It can act as a smaller and shorter sword suitable for fighting in confined areas. It can also be utilized as a backup tool to finish off your enemies. This was also a weapon of choice for Samurai warriors when it came to doing ritual suicide. There is a belief that most Samurai warriors used to place this sword underneath their pillows when they went to sleep.

The Nodachi

A Nodachi sword is one of the biggest Japanese swords available on the market. It’s also likely that you have watched movies where samurai warriors hold a huge sword that can be as large as the warrior. In such cases, there is a chance that it’s a nodachi sword.

A nodachi sword is usually more than 150cm. This is why it is often utilized as the best counter weapon for mounted opponents. You need to use two hands to optimize its power, so this sword was usually used by foot warriors in open battlefields to fight their enemies.

The nodachi sword looks quite similar to a tachi sword, but it has a unique length. Just looking at the structure and size of the nodachi sword, the enemy can be gripped with fear.

The kodachi

You may have observed some swords that are quite similar to the tachi. The tachi sword was utilized as a base and drew inspirations for most sword designs that came several years later, including the kodachi sword.

Remember that the kodachi sword has a similar structure to the tachi. But the major difference is that it’s smaller and shorter. As a result, many people mistake it for a wakizashi sword. Besides, a kodachi sword was usually utilized by merchants and travelers as a self-defense weapon instead of the warriors in battlegrounds.

The Tanto

The tanto sword is a unique Japanese sword that has a small but sharp dagger. This sword was designed to be used for stabbing. The sword can have either a double-edged or a single-edged blade that is straight and often less than 12 inches. In most cases, it can be used alongside the katana sword. Many people highly regard the tanto sword because it was frequently used by the samurai warriors

As you can see, there are several types of Samurai swords that you can find on the market. Therefore, before you decide to purchase any sword, make sure that it meets your needs. Also, you should always buy Japanese from reputable suppliers.
